Adaptive Billing FAQ

1. What is Adaptive Billing?
Adaptive Billing is Ivy’s underlying billing logic that ensures every resident is billed as accurately as possible based on the energy data available for their unit.
Each billing period, Ivy automatically evaluates the data availability for your account and assigns you to one of three billing models:
- SunShare: used when your utility account is successfully connected to Ivy. This model utilizes your actual energy usage data and provides the most accurate billing experience.
- SunRate: used when you have not yet connected your utility account to Ivy. Since Ivy cannot access your energy usage data, you are billed using a per-kWh solar rate based on the energy delivered to your unit.
- Estimated SunShare: used when your utility account has been successfully connected to Ivy but data is delayed or temporarily unavailable. Ivy issues an estimated charge for the period, which is later corrected once data access becomes available again.
2. Which model am I on?
You can see which model is being used to calculate your solar bill in the “Solar bills” section on page 1 of your Ivy Solar Statement.
3. Why can the model change?
Adaptive Billing updates your model each period to ensure that you are always billed using the most accurate information available at that time. Your model can change for two reasons:
- Whether you’ve connected your utility account to Ivy
- If you have never connected your utility account, you will be billed under SunRate.
- Whether Ivy receives your energy usage data for the period
- If you have connected your utility account and Ivy receives your full usage data, you will be billed under SunShare.
- If you have connected your utility account but your utility delays or only partially provides your usage data, you will be billed under Estimated SunShare.
Because utilities sometimes delay usage data or only provide partial data for a period, Ivy automatically assigns you to the most appropriate model to ensure you are billed as accurately as possible.
4. How do I connect my utility account?
Connecting your utility account ensures the most accurate and transparent billing experience. Follow the steps in the guide for your utility provider to connect your account:
5. What happens when I connect my utility account?
When you successfully connect your utility account, Ivy will automatically:
- Switch you to SunShare
- Void the previous SunRate or Estimated SunShare charges
- Recalculate your bills using your actual energy usage
- Apply any corrections or credits to your next Ivy Solar Statement.
6. I connected my utility account, why am I still being billed on SunRate or Estimated SunShare?
Even after you successfully connect your utility account to Ivy, it may take a few billing periods before your utility begins sending your actual energy usage data to our system. This delay is normal and depends entirely on your utility provider’s reporting schedule.
During this time, you may continue to see charges under SunRate or Estimated SunShare. Rest assured, as soon as your energy usage data is available, Ivy will automatically void your past charges, recalculate your bill using your actual energy usage, and apply any corrections or credits to your next Ivy Solar Statement.
7. What are corrected bills?
A corrected bill appears when Ivy replaces a previous solar charge with a new one based on your actual energy usage data. This typically happens after your utility account has been successfully connected and Ivy begins receiving your historical usage data for earlier billing periods.
